Black Men Sitting Down With Racist President Donald Trump

by Bishop Talbert Swan

I’m sick and tired of Black men sitting down with Donald Trump and then insulting our intelligence by claiming they’re doing it for the benefit of the Black community.

Benefit us HOW? Accomplish WHAT?

This man has opposed reparations, dismantled diversity and equity initiatives, targeted federal programs that opened doors for Black professionals, attacked efforts to teach the truth about Black history, attempted to dismantle civil rights protections, and presided over policies that disproportionately threaten Black communities. His record is public. His agenda is public. His contempt for racial justice is not some closely guarded secret.

So what the hades is another dinner, another handshake, another photo opportunity, or another private conversation with an open white supremacist supposed to accomplish that his public actions haven’t already answered?

You don’t get to claim you’re negotiating on behalf of Black people simply because somebody gave you a seat at their table. Who appointed you our representative? What demands did you make? What commitments did you secure? What policies changed? What tangible benefits did Black people receive?

I don’t confuse access with influence, proximity with power, or personal ambition with community advocacy. And let me be perfectly clear: I don’t trust anybody who keeps fraternizing with people advancing an anti-Black agenda while claiming they’re doing it for Black liberation.

You don’t earn our trust by telling us who you had dinner with. You earn it by showing us what you accomplished. Our Ancestors didn’t fight, bleed, march, and die so that another generation of Black men could mistake an invitation into the master’s house for freedom.

Sitting at the table means absolutely nothing if you’re the one being served up on the menu.
